Hi I’m Nick Yates, and I contend that a visit to the Greek Isles could stir emotions among even the most travel-jaded.

Stunning landscapes, spectacularly dramatic sunlight, an “opa!” spirit that still pervades life and of course the glittering sea of Homeric legend.  All this hasn’t perceptively changed much in my years of visits to the Greek Isles.

And could it ever become possible to tire of looking at slim, young, sparsely-clothed European females on their island vacations?  I include this thought because I’m male and most males, I’m confident, would answer the question with a hearty “Ohi!”(No!).  Heck, just look what beach volleyball and its bikinied stars did for NBC Television’s Beijing Olympics ratings.  Not all of the many viewers can have been beachwear manufacturers or volleyball aficionados, even if some did hold themselves out as such.

And the food.  I’ve never been able to figure out if it’s the uniquely-flavored and ubiquitous retsina wine of Greece that is so very conducive to eating olives, tsaziki and pita bread appetizers while overlooking idyllic shorelines, or whether it’s the other way around.  Hopefully my future will provide yet more opportunities to ponder this delicious but essential riddle.  And may the Greeks keep their distinctive cuisine in the face of the growing world threat of global chain-restaurant fare.

Prices, on the other hand, have changed a tad in Greece in recent decades.  But not exorbitantly so.  And Greece can even feign budget-friendliness in the months of May and September, when the endemic summer crowds of tourists and city Greeks are thinner on the ground.

Much of the Greek mainland ironically remains a imperfect foil for the beauty and tranquility of the isles.  That relationship is little changed over the years since I first set foot in Greece, though perhaps one day they may find the inclination and resources to make mainland cities more livable.  That it hasn’t happened yet isn’t unique among nations and detracts not one wit from the singular island life.

And now I’ve worked myself into such an Aegean mood that you’ll have to excuse me while I hunt down a wine shop that carries retsina! If you’re in Greece in the near future, be sure to look for Nick Yates! I’ll be there.

Statistics tell us that over 45% of small businesses fail within the first two years of starting up - on the other hand, millions of self-made business owners have gone on to become millionaires. So what do you need to become one of the successful ones? Don’t worry if you don’t have everything it takes. Training can develop many of the so-called essentials. All you really need to know are which ones are your strengths and which are your weaknesses. Here are some traits you’ll need. It’s up to you to decide if you’ve got them, or if you’ll work on getting them.

?Common sense. If you’re not sure whether you’ve got it, ask your family. It’s the ability to make sound judgments about all manner of life issues. It can be a combination of past experience and knowledge and will help you get to the core of a problem by simplifying it.

?Specialized knowledge of your field. It’s no use jumping into something about which you know nothing. Most successful businessmen have gained much valuable experience in their trade well before they went into business for themselves.

?Self Confidence. When you start out in small business, the buck will usually stop with you. You are the one who has to make difficult decisions and wear the consequences. This is not always something you either have or don’t have. You may have it in one area or situation and lack it in another. Training will help you to get it.

?The ability to get things done. This is actually self-discipline. It’s no use deciding to take the day off because it’s sunny and the surf’s up. There are things requiring your attention and if you leave them they won’t get done. On the other hand, it’s no use being on the job if you fritter the time away on menial talks that should be delegated.

?Creativity. Sure it’s been done that way since Adam, but there could be a better way to do it - one that will save you time and money.

?Ability to lead. Do you get along with others or is there a long line of dissatisfied staff, customers, clients, friends and relatives behind you? Your ability to lead and get people to do great work is paramount to your success in business.

?Self reliance. If you can’t rely on yourself, whom can you rely on? You need to be able to set goals and do whatever it takes to reach them. Sure you’ll have others under you - eventually, but many small business owners need first to rely on themselves.
If you want to start a small business, the best thing to do is get in there and have a go. You can learn as you go, but make sure you listen to others advice, even if you don’t always follow it. Being open to new ideas and advice is important too.

The good thing about working from home is that you can do many more things that you want from life than if you let some jerks run your personal life and emotions at some dead end job. If you like to paint, you can turn your skills into a home based business. If you are a marketing guru, that will work as well.

The one thing that holds a lot of people back when they are looking for a home based business opportunity is money, actually two, the second is fear of being independent. This has been a personal world problem for many of us the last few thousand years. So, we can bust out of this frustration money and independence bubble or we can be like ants, doing the same dullsville thing all our lives.

Many of us feel or felt, now or in the past that in order to start a company, we are going to need a lot of financial backing; something that most people simply cannot come up with. Even though this is true in some aspects, there are also many free, and very cheap, home based business opportunities that you can try out.

Think about it, why do you need to spend a lot of money on start up costs? You more than likely have everything that you need right in front of you or in within easy searching distance. A little search work, so easy to do and even fun, can open whole new worlds of joy, interest and excitement for you. Isn’t that lots better than being bored to death at the same job, you frequently don’t like, for the next 40 to 50 years? Please don’t say no.

Generally speaking, the first thing that people do when they are searching for a home based business opportunity is search the internet. There are hundreds of sites that will promise you the world for no money at all; the bad thing about these sites is that they actually sound like good opportunities.

The problem is that the majority of these sites are simply scams that are meant to dupe you out of your money. Sorry, that’s the truth. To take this even further, these scams ruin it for the legitimate companies that are available.

So obviously, the best way to find a free home based business opportunity is to do your homework. One of the best opportunities available is affiliate marketing programs. This is a great way for anybody to start their own home based business with no start up costs at all.

This involves getting paid by affiliates for driving traffic to their site. Eventually you may need to start putting money into your business to be more successful, but you can get started with relatively few problems at all.

Another free home based business opportunity that many people take advantage of is filling out online surveys. This is a legitimate way to make money from home, but you must be aware of all of the scams that are out there.

The only way to do this is by searching through all of the available companies, doing your triage or due diligence, and then choosing the ones that are most reputable. Finding ratings for survey sites is not difficult because there are a lot of people that are interested in this home business opportunity. Usually, the best ones are free.

Finding a free home based business opportunity is not impossible. In order to be successful, you will want to watch out for scam artists so you do not end up losing valuable time and money and, most importantly, your burning fire hope for better things in your heart and life.
